Test Information: The Congenital/Neonatal Infection Workup includes the following tests:

  1. Anti Toxoplasma, IgG, IgM [TOXGM2]
  2. Rheumatoid Factor [RF]
  3. Rubella IgM to Washington State Lab (Sendout) [RRUBM]
  4. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Antibodies, IgM and IgG (Sendout) [RCMVMG]
  5. Cytomegalovirus by Qualitative PCR, Urine (Sendout)
  6. Herpes Simplex virus Rapid PCR of nasopharynx, conjunctiva, and any lesion. HSV SemiQnt Rapid PCR, Swab/CSF [RPDHSV]
  7. CMV Saliva Swab* CMV Qualitative by PCR, Tissue/Cells [CMVQLT]
  8. Syphilis Reflexive Screen [SYPHRE] on infant and mother

*Note: Saliva swabs have not been validated for the CMVQLT assay. Interpret results with caution.

Collection

Infant:

  • 10 mL blood in RED TOP tube
  • Urine in a sterile collection cup
  • Swabs from the recommended sites: nasopharynx, conjunctiva, and any skin lesions present. Acceptable specimen types are cutaneous and mucocutaneous swabs stored in UTM, Remel M4, Remel M4RT, Remel M5, or Remel M6 transport media. Follow the manufacturers’ package inserts for collection media and acceptable swab types. Do not use calcium alginate swabs, as they may contain substances that inhibit PCR testing.
  • Saliva swab in Viral Transport Media

Mom: 6 mL blood in GOLD SST or RED TOP tube
