- Description
Schistosoma and occasionally microfilariae can be found in urine. Entamoeba, Paragonimus, Ascaris, hookworms or Strongyloides can be detected in sputum or BAL. Aspirates from other sites such as liver can be useful in detecting amoeba or Echinococcus (hydatid disease).

Sputum: Send fresh AM specimen. Up to 3 samples from separate days acceptable; if sputa negative, recommend stool, see Lab Mnemonic: OAPP.
Urine: Collect multiple specimens for R/O Schistosomiasis, preferably midday urine. For microfilariae, submit a clean catch, random urine. Do not use preservative for collections. Send the entire void.
Aspirates: Collect in syringe or cup. If adequate specimen is available, fill an EcoFix preservative tube in addition to unpreserved sample.

Transport to lab at room temperature immediately after collection. If delayed, refrigerate and transport within 24 hours of collection.

Refer to procedure for specimen or organism specific handling. If sufficient volume of specimen received for rule out amoeba, preserve in EcoFix as well as analyzing unpreserved specimen.
