- Description
Primarily for the detection of helminths and amoeba other than Entamoeba histolytica. NOT optimal test for Giardia, E. histolytica, Cryptosporidium, and Cyclospora; order Enteric Pathogen Panel (STOEPM). For Cystoisospora, see CYCLOP. For Microsporida, see RMICS. For ova and parasites on urine or sputum, see OAP.
The patient should be cautioned against the use of antacids, barium, bismuth, antidiarrheal medication, or oily laxatives prior to collection of the specimen.

Preserved stool:
- UW-MT and UW-NW: Collect specimen in Para-Pak Ultra EcoFix vial (any other preservative vials/kits will not be accepted).
- HMC: Send specimen in Formalin and Zinc-PVA preservative kit (avail in Micro Lab).
- Outside clients - Collect specimen in Parap-Pak Ultra Eco-Fix (any other preservative will not be accepted). Transport to the lab at room temperature within 1 month. Refrigeration is acceptable for Eco-Fix.
The specimen is ideally passed into a bedpan but must not be contaminated with urine. Alternatively, a large plastic bag or “saran wrap” may be placed over the toilet seat opening and the specimen passed into the bag.
Fresh liquid stool: submit at room temperature within 1 hour.
Formed unpreserved stool: transport at room temperature within 24 hours
HMC ONLY: If Strongyloides is suspected, also submit 5 mL FRESH, NON-REFRIGERATED stool
Suspected intestinal worm: Submit worm or worm segment in clean, closed container with no additive or preservative. Transport at room temperature to lab within 1 hour. (order OIDP)

Submit up to 3 specimens on separate days.
Note: For patients who have been hospitalized more than 3 days, Lab Medicine Resident or Microbiology Fellow approval is required.
