Wound Bacterial Culture and Sensitivity with Gram Stain
General Information
- Lab Name
- Wound C/S w/Gram
- Lab Code
- WNDC
- Epic Name
- Wound C/S w/Gram
- Description
This test is intended for the aerobic culture only of superficial sites such as wound drainages, skin, ulcer, superficial abrasion, first degree burn, impetigo, folliculitis, and cellulitis. The culture does NOT include anaerobic workup.
For abscess, hardware, deep and/or sterile wound sites, or when rule out anaerobes is required, see Wound Bacterial Culture and Sensitivity (Special Anaerobic) with Gram Stain [WNDANC]
To rule out S. aureus only, see R/O Staph aureus Bacterial Culture only without Gram [STAPHC].
Body fluids or drains, see Place Holder for Body Fluid Bacterial Culture and Sensitivity with Gram Stain (includes anaerobes) [FLDPHC].
Tissues or biopsies, see Tissue Bacterial Culture and Sensitivity with Gram [TISC].
Genital cultures, see Genital Bacterial Culture and Sensitivity (Routine) without Gram Stain [GUC] or Genital Bacterial Culture and Sensitivity (Anaerobic) with Gram Stain [GUWANC].

Ordering & Collection
- Specimen Type
- Superficial wound, wound drainage
- Collection
-
Remove surface exudate before collecting specimen.
Swab: Preferred method of transport is ESwab. Gel swab is acceptable.
Unacceptable: Specimens collected in Universal Transport Medium (UTM); dry swabs; syringes with needles; specimens collected with expired swabs/transport media.
- Handling Instructions
Specify exact source of specimen for optimal workup
Swabs: Transport at room temperature, ideally within 4 hours of collection, but not more than 24 hours after collection.
Specimens will be rejected if received > 24 hours after collection. Viability of organisms is significantly reduced after 24 hours.
- Quantity
-
Requested: Eswab or as much fluid as possible
Minimum: Eswab or 1 mL fluid
Processing
- Receiving Instructions
Log in as WNDANC, not WNDC, if R/O ANAEROBES or AER & ANA is specified, or if specimen is described as abscess, fluid drainage. Boils, cysts, and furuncles will be ordered and processed as WNDANC to rule out common anaerobic bacteria that can cause skin infections.
