This culture is intended for abscesses or surgical specimens requiring aerobic and anaerobic workup. For vaginal, vulva, cervix/endocervix or urethral specimens, order aerobic culture Genital Bacterial Culture and Sensitivity (Routine) without Gram Stain [GUC]
For amplified nucleic acid detection testing, see GC (N. gonorrhoeae) and CT (Chlamydia trachomatis) Amplified Nucleic Acid Detection [GCCTAD], Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) Amplified Nucleic Acid Detection [GCCAD], Trichomonas vaginalis Amplified Nucleic Acid Detection [TRICAD], or Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) Amplified Nucleic Acid Detection [CHLAD]

Preferred specimen: Tissue in sterile container or Fluid in syringe (expel air and replace needle with Luer tip cap)
Swab (less optimal): Preferred method of transport is ESwab. Gel swab is acceptable.
Universal Transport Medium (UTM) is not acceptable for bacterial and fungal cultures
Send to lab within 2 hours. To reduce oxygen exposure, collect in syringe not cup. Remove needle, expel air from syringe and cap. If a swab MUST be used, transport to lab immediately. Specify exact source. Transport at room temperature as cold temperature reduces the viability of anaerobes.
Unacceptable: Refrigerated or frozen samples; specimens collected in Universal Transport Medium (UTM); specimens collected with expired swabs/transport media.
