- Description
STAT requests require approval from Lab Med Resident. Increased urinary porphobilinogen concentration in the presence of acute clinical symptoms is consistent with a biochemical diagnosis of acute porphyria, variegate porphyria, or hereditary coproporphyria. Normal concentrations may be seen in porphyria patients who are asymptomatic at the time of collection.

For urine samples less than 30 mL, add sodium bicarbonate to the minimum ratio of 2 mg per mL of urine. HMC Chemistry will provide aliquot tubes containing 200 mg sodium bicarbinate for about 10 mL of urine.
Mix well. Refrigerate in a dark bottle.
