Urinalysis Complete, with Reflexive Urine Culture (Immunocompetent Patients Only)

General Information

Lab Name
Urinalysis with Reflex Culture
Lab Code
UACRC
Epic Name
Urinalysis with Reflex Culture
Description

For immunocompetent patients only. Samples <6 mL will be rejected for testing.

NOTE: Not available to Fred Hutch locations. For immunocompromised patients see Complete Urinalysis [UAC] or Urinalysis Workup, Urine [UAWK].

Complete urinalysis performed including dipstick and microscopic results. Urine culture without gram stain will be added if indicated by urinalysis results.

NOTE: For optimum urine biochemical measurements, urine specimens should be received within 2 hours of collection, with refrigeration if delayed beyond 2 hours. For optimum detection of cellular casts, the specimen should be examined as soon as possible. Specimens over 24 hours old will be rejected unless provider indicates the specimen is an irreproducible specimen because of timing.

BD Vacutainer Urinalysis Preservative Tube specimens are stable for up to 24 hours at room temperature.

Specimen Type
Urine
Collection

Fresh RANDOM URINE – Prefer “clean-catch” mid-stream collection in yellow top urine collection tube (UA no additive) AND a gray top urine preservative tube completely filled (boric acid). Urine received in a sterile collection cup will also be acceptable for Urinalysis, but turnaround times will be delayed on these specimens due to the extra processing required. Reflexive urine culture will NOT be performed if a gray top tube is not received.

UW-MT only: Urine in BD Vacutainer Urinalysis Preservative tube to maximum fill line preferred. Minimum fill line acceptable.

Handling Instructions

The laboratory should receive specimen within 1.5 hours of collection. If delayed, sample should be refrigerated and delivered on wet ice to the laboratory.

BD Vacutainer Urinalysis Preservative Tube specimens are stable for up to 24 hours at room temperature.

UW-MT only: send urine samples to NW220 SPS.

Note: Urinalysis cannot be added on to a specimen after it has been processed on the automation line.

Quantity
Requested: 12 mL urine (8 mL in the yellow-top tube, 4 mL in the gray-top tube)
Minimum: 5 mL urine (2 mL in the yellow-top tube AND 3 mL in the gray-top preservative tube

Processing

Receiving Instructions

Refrigerate urine. Both a yellow top urine (with or without UA preservative) and a gray top urine must arrive together for test to be performed. If a gray-top is not received, or volume is insufficient to aliquot to a gray top tube (<6 mL), cancel the order as YQNS and reach out to the provider. Available options include:

  • 2 - 5 mL: provider can have a UAC and a URNC/URNCX
  • <2 mL: provider must choose between urinalysis and culture
