Description

Microscopic exam (UMIC) will be added, if indicated by dipstick results. Urine culture NOT added.

NOTE:For optimum urine biochemical measurements, urine specimens should be received within 2 hours of collection, with refrigeration if delayed beyond 2 hours. For optimum detection of cellular casts, the specimen should be examined as soon as possible. Specimens over 24 hours old will be rejected unless provider indicates the specimen is an irreproducible specimen because of timing.

BD Vacutainer Urinalysis Preservative Tube specimens are stable for up to 24 hours at room temperature.

Fresh RANDOM URINE - Prefer "clean-catch" mid-stream collection in sterile cup or yellow top urine collection tube (UA no additive)

UW-MT only: Urine in BD Vacutainer Urinalysis Preservative tube to maximum fill line preferred. Minimum fill line acceptable.

Handling Instructions

The Laboratory should receive specimen within 1.5 hours of collection. If delayed, sample should be refrigerated and delivered on wet ice to the laboratory. BD Vacutainer Urinalysis Preservative Tube specimens are stable for up to 24 hours at room temperature.

UW-MT Only: send urine samples to NW220 SPS.

FHCC only: Unpreserved urine should be received by the Laboratory within 2 hours of collection. Unpreserved samples outside of stability will be rejected. Urine collected in BD Vacutainer Urinalysis Preservative tubes will be accepted for up to 24 hours at room temperature.

Note: Urinalysis cannot be added on to a specimen after it has been processed on the automation line.

Note: Can be done on 1 mL in extenuating circumstances, such as on infants.

Once urine sample has been processed by Urinalysis analyzers, no additional tests may be performed. Check with the laboratory to see if extra sample is available. Recollection is advised for optimal results. Address stability questions to UA tech prior to calling clinic.
