NT-proBNP
General Information
- Lab Name
- NT proBNP
- Lab Code
- NTBNP
- Epic Name
- NT-proBNP
- Description
The amino terminal propeptide of B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-ProBNP) is useful in diagnosing and monitoring heart failure. This assay is run infrequently and is often used in specific clinical indications (e.g., amyloidosis). For more rapid turnaround, please see test code B-Type Natriuretic Peptide [BNAP].

- Interferences and Limitations
Biotin is known to interfere with this assay. Patients should not take supplements or multivitamins containing biotin for at least 24 hours before blood collection.
Also, note that a lack of N-terminal-pro brain natruretic peptide (NT-proBNP) elevations have been reported if congestive heart failure is very acute (first hour) or occurs with ventricular inflow obstruction (hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, mitral stenosis, atrial myxoma).
