- Description
Ordering Recommendation: Test for persistent diarrhea (>14 days) or known risk factors if Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora or Cystoisospora is the suspected infectious agent.
- This is not the optimal test for Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora cayetanensis; refer to Enteric Pathogen Panel [STOEPM].
Due to the various shedding cycles of many parasites, three separate stool specimens collected over a 5-7 day period are recommended.

Collect stool into a Para-Pak EcoFix vial within one hour of collection. Add sample to the red fill line on the preservative container (approx. 2 g).
- Also acceptable: Collect 2 g of stool into an AlcorFix vial (ARUP Supply #52059) within one hour of collection.
- Note: Para-Pak and Para-Pak Ultra differ in the cap design. Both are acceptable.
- No other preservative vials/kits will be accepted.
Transport to the lab at room temperature. Refrigeration is acceptable for EcoFix but is not preferred.
If sending fresh stool is unavoidable:
- Unformed (liquid, diarrheic) stool must be delivered to the Lab within 30 minutes. Please hand the specimen to a lead or supervisor and state that the stool must be transferred to EcoFix within the next 30 minutes.
- Handling Instructions
Outside Laboratories: Transfer 1-2 g fresh stool into a Para-Pak EcoFix transport vial within one hour of collection. Store and transport preserved stool at ambient temperature (refrigerated acceptable).
- Also acceptable: Collect 2 g of stool into an AlcorFix vial (ARUP Supply #52059) within one hour of collection.
- Note: Para-Pak and Para-Pak Ultra differ in the cap design. Both are acceptable.
- No other preservative vials/kits will be accepted.
Interface Clients: This test is not available for direct ordering in interface systems. Orders must be placed using a paper requisition. Results will not file via interface.
Stability: Ambient (preferred): 9 months; Refrigerated: 9 months; Frozen: Unacceptable.
Unacceptable Conditions: Unpreserved stool.

PSPS: Samples should arrive in EcoFix vial or other acceptable preservative (see Collection).
- Unpreserved stool must be transferred to Ecofix vial within one hour of collection.
