- Description
Test Information: This test detects rubella by real-time PCR from specimens or viral culture isolates. Respiratory virus isolation and identification will be performed on negative respiratory specimens. Samples are sent to the WA Department of Health Public Health Lab, and WA PHL forwards to the Minnesota Department of Health Infectious Disease Laboratory for testing.
Ordering Requirements:
- Pre-approval required. Providers must consult the Local Health Jurisdiction (LHJ) epidemiologist of the patient's county of residence prior to sample submission. LHJ staff must notify the Washington State Department of Health Office of Communicable Disease Epidemiology. Samples that arrive at WA PHL without prior approval may be discarded without notice.
- Laboratory Medicine Resident (LMR) approval is required to ensure proper coordination between the care team, lab staff, and public health organizations.

Swab: Synthetic swab in 2 mL of viral transport media (preferred) or universal transport media. Note the sample source (Nasopharyngeal, Throat, etc.) on the specimen label.
Urine: Collect 3 mL random urine (minimum 250 µL) in a sterile urine collection container.

Processing

PSPS: Refrigerate samples for transport to WA PHL within 24 hours.
- If samples will not arrive at WA PHL within 24 hours, they should be frozen at -20°C.

- Complete a WA PHL Specimen Pass-Through Form for each sample type. Orders for this test cannot be placed electronically in the ETOR.
- Note: The LMR or CAST may ask for specific information (contact person, case number, etc.) to be included on the form to ensure that the patient's case is routed properly.
- Send samples to WA PHL in Shoreline at refrigerated temperature (unless not expected to arrive within the 24-hour stability) via STAT courier. After 24 hours, freeze samples at -20°C .
