The quantitative HIV2VL assay is used to monitor HIV-2 RNA in plasma from known HIV-2-infected patients. This RT-PCR assay targets the Long Terminal Repeat (LTR) region of the HIV-2 genome.
NOTE: This test is temporarily being referred by UW Laboratory Medicine to the New York State Dept of Health Bloodborne Viruses Laboratory (5/10/19). Continue to order the test through UW Lab Medicine. The New York State Dept of Health will not accept samples sent directly to them (unless by prior arrangement).

Ordering & Collection

10 mL blood in LAVENDER TOP (EDTA) tube or
Blood in a single 5 or
8.5 mL PEARL TOP (EDTA) PPT tube or
3 - 4 mL of CSF in sterile collection tube
- Handling Instructions
Send sample to lab for processing within 6 hours of collection.
requested: 3 to 4 mL EDTA plasma or CSF
minimum: 2 mL EDTA plasma or CSF
Lavendar Top tube: Centrifuge, aliquot 3 to 4 mL plasma into polypropylene tube within 6 hours of collection and freeze at -70°C or colder.
Pearl Top tube: Centrifuge within 6 hours of collection and freeze at -70 °C or colder.
CSF: Freeze at -70 °C or colder.
Note: Sample should be a dedicated collection tube that has not been accessioned for any other assay, unless approved by Retrovirus Lab.
