Collection

Remove surface exudate before collecting specimen.

Swab: Preferred method of transport is ESwab. Gel swab is acceptable.

Abscess aspirate: Collect fluid in a syringe, remove needle and cap syringe.

Unacceptable: Specimens collected in Universal Transport Medium (UTM); dry swabs; syringes with needles; specimens collected with expired swabs/transport media.

Handling Instructions

Describe specific source of specimen for optimal work-up.

Transport at room temperature within 2 hrs (optimal), up to 24hrs.

Abscess aspirate: Transport in syringe (remove needle and cap syringe) or sterile leak-proof container at room temperature

Specimens will be rejected if received > 24 hours after collection. Viability of organisms is significantly reduced after 24 hours.
