Description
STAT requests require approval from Lab Med Resident. Increased urinary porphobilinogen concentration in the presence of acute clinical symptoms is consistent with a biochemical diagnosis of acute porphyria, variegate porphyria, or hereditary coproporphyria. Normal concentrations may be seen in porphyria patients who are asymptomatic at the time of collection. Porphyria Foundation Website

RANDOM URINE: STAT specimens do not need preservative if delivered immediately to the laboratory. Protect specimen from light.  

RANDOM URINE: To ROUTINE specimens add approximately 5 g sodium bicarbonate for 30 mL or more urine (1 well rounded tsp). Add less sodium bicarbonate for volumes less than 30 mL. Protect specimen from light.
