Values >15,000 mcg/L are at risk of acute renal failure Results between 1000 - 15,000 mcg/L are associated with vigorous exercise, myocardial infarction, muscle injury and other conditions.

Collection: RANDOM URINE.

Myoglobin in acidic urine is UNSTABLE (decrease by 30% in 30 min.). 10 mL urine to a Urine Myoglobin Preservative Tube immediately upon collection. These Myoglobin Preservative tubes which contain 200 mg of sodium bicarbonate are available from the laboratory and should be on hand prior to collection.
Handling Instructions: Send specimen to laboratory as soon as possible.

minimum: 5 mL urine

Processing

Processing: UW-MT Instructions: SPS, urine myoglobin is UNSTABLE. Forward to HMC Automation Bench. Note: Once the urine is mixed with the sodium carbonate at the collection site the myoglobin is more stable and doesn't need to be frozen but should be sent to HMC within 24 hours. If shipment delayed >24 hrs, Freeze @ -20°C.Frozen samples received from outside laboratories, forward to HMC Stat Tox as soon as possible after login.

HMC Instructions: SPS, urine myoglobin is UNSTABLE. Deliver to Automation Bench ASAP (routine and stat.)

Outside Laboratory: If you do not have a Sodium Bicarb container, freeze immediately, send to Lab Medicine on dry ice. Even with the Sodium Bicarb, if shipment delayed >24 hrs, Freeze @ -20°C.
