Note: Blood Magnesium [MG] and Blood Creatinine [CRE] as well as Random Urine Creatinine and Random Urine Magnesium are required to calculate the Magnesium Fractional Excretion. There is an additional charge for each of the blood components.

RANDOM URINE plus blood magnesium and creatinine collected within 24 hours of the urine.
Unacceptable: Any timed urine collection
Handling Instructions
Urine: No preservative required, refrigeration preferred.
Quantity
requested: 10 mL urine + 0.5 mL serum/plasma
minimum: 1 mL urine + 0.2 mL serum/plasma

Processing

Processing
Urine specimens should be acidified.
UW-MT Instructions: Take specimen to the Automated Chemistry Technologist who will pH the sample to 1.

HMC Instructions: Forward specimen to UW-MT with next shipment. The Automated Chemistry Technologist will pH sample.

Note:  Be sure there is a Blood creatinine and Blood magnesium ordered within time noted above. Chemistry needs a copy of the request form.
