Description

Note: Creatinine from a blood sample is required to calculate Creatinine Clearance. If blood is not received 48 hours prior to, during or upon completion of urine collection, only a URINE CREATININE [UCRE] will be performed.

Ordering & Collection

Specimen Type: Urine
Collection: 24-hour collection preferred; shorter timed collections (e.g., 12-, 8-, 6- or 4-h) accepted. A specimen with NO preservative is preferred; specimens preserved with acetic acid, boric acid or hydrochloric acid are acceptable.
Handling Instructions: Creatinine is stable in urine with or without preservative for 2 days at room temperature and 6 days refrigerated.
Quantity: Requested: 10 mL urine + 0.2 mL serum
Minimum: 0.5 mL urine + 0.2 mL serum

Processing

Receiving Instructions: Mix urine, Measure & record Total Volume. Refrigerate urine.
Note: Be sure there is a BLOOD creatinine ordered within 48 hours of the urine collection.
