Ordering & Collection

Specimen Type
Tissue
Collection

Submit surgically collected tissue in a sterile container. Do not add fluid and do not allow tissue to dry out. Do not send large tissues requiring dissection; send small pieces most likely to be infected.

Handling Instructions

Transport at room temperature within 2 hours of collection; cold reduces viability of anaerobes.

Specimens will be rejected if received >24 hours after collection. Viability of organisms is significantly reduced after 24 hours.

Frozen specimens are not acceptable for culture. Alternatively, PCR testing is available on frozen specimens. See Bacterial DNA detection from direct specimens and identification by amplification [BCTPCR].
