Thiocyanate

General Information

Lab Name
Thiocyanate
Lab Code
THCNG
Epic Name
Thiocyanate
Description

Thiocyanate is a metabolite of cyanide that reflects cumulative recent cyanide exposure, but does not indicate current cyanide concentrations. It may be mildly increased in smokers and can accumulate to high concentrations after prolonged therapy (2 or more days) with nitroprusside.

The concentration of thiocyanate in serum is determined by spectrophotometry at 460 nm after protein precipitation and reaction with ferric nitrate. The reportable range is 0.0-50.0 and the imprecision is between 4 and 15%CV.

Synonyms
Nitroprusside
