Description

This test is intended for the fungal culture of skin/skin scrapings (e.g. axilla/groin), nail, hair and vesicle specimens. The culture is incubated for four weeks. Yeast and mould can be recovered during this incubation period.

Collection

Disinfect area with alcohol. Collect specimen in sterile cup or Petri dish using sterile blade, clipper and/or scissor. SKIN: Scrape periphery of lesion(s),including apparently healthy skin adjoining lesion(s). NAIL: Discard superficial debris before collection. Submit clippings, deep subungual debris, and/or scrapings from active margin. HAIR: Submit shaft & root of several infected hairs. Submit hair which fluoresces under Wood's lamp. VESICLE: Snip off tips of vesicles.

Handling Instructions

Transport at room temperature within 2 hrs (optimal), up to 24hrs for vesicle specimens. Skin, nail and hair are acceptable up to 48hrs after collection.

Vesicle specimens will be rejected if received > 24 hours after collection. Viability of organisms is significantly reduced after 24 hours.

Skin, nail and hair specimens will be rejected after 48hrs of collection.
