Specimen Type: Nasopharyngeal swab in UTM (Universal Transport Medium), nasal wash
Collection: UW-ML/UW-NW: Flocked nasopharyngeal (NP) swab in UTM (Univeral Transport Medium) only.

HMC: Flocked nasopharyngeal (NP) swab in UTM (Univeral Transport Medium), nasal wash.

Handling Instructions: Send to the laboratory as soon as possible.
Note: If nasal wash sample will not arrive in lab within 2 hours, send on ice or cold packs, do NOT freeze.
Quantity: Requested: NP or Nasal swab in 3.0 mL UTM or 1.5 mL nasal wash
Minimum: NP or Nasal swab in 3.0 mL UTM or 1.0 mL nasal wash

Receiving Instructions: Store specimen at 2 - 8 °C.

HMC SPS: Deliver to Microbiology as STAT on Receipt.

UW-ML SPS: Deliver to Microbiology as STAT on Receipt.

UW-NW SPS: Deliver to UA bench as STAT on Receipt.

Stability: Specimen in UTM is stable for up to 24 hours when stored at room temperature or for up to 7 days when stored at 2 - 8°C. Nasal wash specimens not received in the lab within 2 hours after collection should be transported at 2 - 8°C. Transfer 0.6 mL of nasal wash to a UTM tube within 6 hours of collection.
