Test Information: The Soluble Terminal Complement Complex enzyme immunoassay (EIA) measures the amount of the SC5b-9 complex present in human plasma.

Ordering Requirements: Submit orders via Epic. A completed Cincinnati Children's Hospital requisition is not required.

Handling Instructions

Outside Laboratories: Centrifuge sample, transfer plasma into two* separate plastic vials, and freeze at -20°C within two hours of collection while awaiting shipment. Transport sample(s) on dry ice.

  • *Two aliquots preferred; 0.5 mL plasma in one aliquot is accepted.

Stability: Frozen: 6 months; Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable.

  • Note: Samples frozen at -20°C are acceptable for testing.

Unacceptable Conditions: Incorrect anticoagulant, hemolyzed, clotted, or older than 2 hours unspun.

Requested: 0.8 mL EDTA plasma (RSC5B9) & 0.2 mL EDTA plasma (UW431)
Minimum: 0.5 mL EDTA plasma (RSC5B9)

Processing

Receiving Instructions

Centrifuge sample, transfer plasma into two separate plastic vials (0.8 mL for RSC5B9 and 0.2 mL for UW431), and freeze at -20°C within two hours of collection. If insufficient plasma is obtained, prioritize the Sendout test.

  • RSC5B9 (Sendout Battery): Store in the Sendouts -20°C freezer rack.
  • UW431 (ImmStudy SC5b-9 Level): Store in the Immunology -70°C freezer rack.

Sendouts:

  • Complete a Cincinnati Children's TMA Lab requisition.
  • Order Cincinnati Children's Test: 7304502.
  • Ship FedEx Priority Overnight, Monday through Thursday only, with sufficient dry ice to ensure that samples remain frozen throughout transport.
    • Package samples as close to FedEx pickup as possible to ensure that samples remain frozen upon arrival at Cincinnati Lab.
    • Samples that arrive thawed will be rejected.
  • Saturday delivery is not available for this laboratory.
