Description

Test Information: The Soluble Terminal Complement Complex enzyme immunoassay (EIA) measures the amount of the SC5b-9 complex present in human plasma.

Urgent Testing: Testing is performed at Seattle Children's Hospital Laboratory twice weekly, Monday and Thursday. Samples in lab by 09:00 a.m. on Mon/Thurs will be resulted same-day (by 18:00). Otherwise, the turnaround time is 4 days from sample receipt. If expedited testing is required, please contact the Lab Med Resident On-Call to arrange. Expedited testing can be performed Mon-Fri with 24-hour advance notice.

Handling Instructions

Outside Laboratories: Centrifuge sample, aliquot plasma into a separate plastic vial, and freeze at -20°C within two hours of collection. Transport on dry ice.

Stability: Frozen -20°C (preferred): 6 months; Refrigerated: 24 hours; Ambient: 8 hours.

Unacceptable Conditions: Incorrect anticoagulant, hemolyzed, clotted, or older than 2 hours unspun.

Requested: 0.5 mL EDTA plasma + 0.5 mL EDTA plasma for UW431
Minimum: 0.2 mL EDTA plasma

Processing

Receiving Instructions

Centrifuge sample, aliquot plasma into two separate plastic vials, and freeze within 2 hours of collection. If sample volume is insufficient, prioritize the Sendout test.

  • RC5B9L (Sendout Battery): Store in the Sendouts -20°C freezer rack.
  • UW431 (ImmStudy SC5b-9 Level): Store in the Immunology -70°C freezer rack.

  • Interfaced: Yes [Interface: 601; Department: SOSC]
  • Send samples on dry ice with a copy of the MayoAccess Batch Sheet via DLMP or DE courier.
  • Urgent Sample Handling: In select cases, providers may arrange with SEACHL to perform testing on an unscheduled day. If approved, the LMR will contact SPS/Sendouts asking lab staff to prioritize transport.
    • Write "STAT" on the outgoing MayoAccess Batch Sheet to ensure urgent processing at intake.
    • Urgent samples should be sent immediately via Delivery Express to ensure that they reach Children's before the cutoff for the designated run.
