Specimen Type
Qiagen vaginal swab in buffer
Collection

Vaginal swab from Qiagen AmniSure kit only (kits provided by Lab Medicine, call 206-668-1344 for info)

The specimen should be obtained by carefully inserting the polyester tip of the swab into the vagina approximately 2 to 3 inches deep for 1 full minute. After 1 minute, the swab should be removed and placed into the Qiagen AmniSure solvent vial and rinsed by rotation for 1 full minute. After 1 minute, the swab can be disposed of. The labeled solvent vial can then be sent to the laboratory for testing.

Handling Instructions

Transport sample to the laboratory immediately for testing. Sample must be received in the laboratory within 4 hours (room temp) of collection unless immediately stored at 2-8°C.

Processing

Receiving Instructions

Deliver the sample to the Urinalysis bench STAT, regardless of the ordering priority. If testing cannot be started within 4 hours of collection, refrigerate the sample for up to 6 hours at 2-8°C.

Approval required from Processing/performing laboratory to ensure specimen collection and transport time requirements are met. Does not need LMR approval unless escalation needed.
