Description

Test Information: This group of assays are used for enumerating the percentages and absolute cell counts for lymphocyte subsets in whole blood. The tests are used in the evaluation of immune function, in the setting of primary and secondary immune deficiencies, post-transplant, and monitoring monoclonal antibody therapies. Multiple panels are available; refer to the Seattle Children's Hospital test menu for further detail: Lymphocyte Subset Analysis.

Ordering Requirements:

  • Providers must select a specific Lymphocyte Subset Panel when placing the Epic order. Failure to provide this information to the lab may result in significant delays and/or cancellations.
  • Test pre-approved for orders originating from Fred Hutch or UW Medicine Allergy Clinics (MSALL, UESALL). Laboratory Medicine Resident approval is required for all other ordering locations.

Note: Limited sample stability of 30 hours. Time specimen collections accordingly.

3 mL blood in LAVENDER TOP (EDTA) Tube

  • Also Accepted: Dark Green/Sodium Heparin also acceptable if CBC and differential results are submitted. Microtainers not recommended.

Collection Timing:

  • Draw Monday through Friday. Do not collect samples on Saturdays or before holidays. If drawn on Sunday, collect after 12 noon.
  • Friday collections must arrive in lab by 13:30 to ensure same-day transport to Seattle Children's.

Expedite transport to the laboratory. Testing must be initiated by Seattle Children's lab within 30 hours of collection.

Outside Laboratories: Due to limited sample stability, clients should arrange for testing directly with Seattle Children's Hospital Laboratory.

Processing

Processing

Store and transport whole blood samples at room temperature.

  • Expedite Processing. Notify Sendouts staff immediately upon sample receipt.
  • AM collections must be sent out same day.
  • PM collections may be held at ambient temperature for sendout the following day.
    • Exception: Samples collected on Friday afternoons must be sent out same day.

Sendouts:

  • Complete the SCH Cell Marker Requisition. Use the Epic order to select the appropriate panel and additional antibodies, if requested.
  • Expedite transport to SCH Lab. Testing must be initiated within 30 hours of collection. Samples collected the previous day must be sent as soon as possible the next morning.
  • Notify SCH Cell Marker Lab if sample is nearing stablility limit of 30 hrs (206-987-2560).

Stability: Ambient: 30 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable.

Reject Due To: Clotted specimen, Microtainer, Refrigerated.
