- Description
The UW LDT respiratory panel is a multiplexed semi-qualitative real-time PCR (RT-PCR) assay intended for the detection and identification of multiple respiratory viral pathogens obtained from respiratory samples of individuals suspected of lower respiratory tract infections.
The following viruses are targeted:
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus, RSV (matrix)
- Metapneumovirus, MPV (fusion)
- Influenza type A (matrix)
- Influenza type B (matrix)
- Parainfluenza type 1, PIV1 (polymerase)
- Parainfluenza type 2, PIV2 (polymerase)
- Parainfluenza type 3, PIV3 (matrix)
- Parainfluenza type 4, PIV4 (nucleoprotein)
- Coronavirus (polymerase) NOT SARS_CoV-2
- Rhinovirus (5’NCR)
- Bocavirus (NP1)
- Adenovirus (hexon/penton)
This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by the University of Washington Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Ordering & Collection
- Specimen Type
- BAL, Washing, Swab, Sputum, or Aspirate. Note: Need approval from Laboratory Medicine Resident for Serum, Plasma, CSF, Body Fluid, or Tissue.
- Collection
-
BAL, Washing, Swab, Sputum, or Aspirate: 1 mL in sterile tube.
Serum, Plasma, CSF, or Body Fluid: 1 mL in sterile tube.
Tissue: Pea size amount in sterile tube or universal transport media (UTM).
Minimum sample requirement: 0.5 mL
- Handling Instructions
Refrigerate within 4 hours of collection. Send refrigerated specimen at 2 to 8°C to lab on ice packs within 48 hours of collection. Specimens frozen at -20°C are acceptable on dry ice.
- Quantity
-
requested: 1 mL
minimum: 0.5 mL
Processing
- Processing
Send sample to UW Virology Laboratory within 4 hours of collection. If sample cannot arrive within 4 hours of collection, store sample at 2-8°C (ice pack) for up to 48 hours of collection. If there is a greater than 48 hour delay before testing sample, freeze sample at -10°C or colder and ship on dry ice. If freezer and/or dry ice is not available, ship immediately at 2-8°C (ice pack). Samples stored at 2-8°C greater than 48 hours old may be rejected. Do not freeze/thaw.
Note: If both REVSQT & testing for CVIR is ordered on a single specimen, the specimen must be split and an aliquot sent to each of the different laboratories. If splitting the sample is not possible, send sample to CVIR first with a note for CVIR to forward to EVIR. Minimum of 1 mL for EVIR test order.
