Useful For:
- An aid in the evaluation of liver function
- Evaluation of liver function changes before the formation of more advanced clinical signs of illness such as icterus
- An aid in the determination of hepatic dysfunction as a result of chemical and environmental injury
- An indicator of hepatic histological improvement in chronic hepatitis C patients responding to interferon treatment
- An indicator for intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy

Patient Preparation: Patient must be fasting for 12 hours. Infants and pregnant patients do not need to fast.

- Interferences and Limitations
Cautions:
Serum total bile acid testing is generally not suitable for differentiation among the various types of liver diseases.
Total bile acid concentration is increased after meals; samples should be collected under fasting conditions.

Patient Preparation: Non-fasting samples are acceptable for pregnant patients. Other patients must fast for a minimum of 12 hours prior to collection.
- Handling Instructions
Outside Laboratories: Centrifuge sample and transfer serum to a separate plastic vial within 2 hours of collection. Refrigerate serum.
Stability: Refrigerated (preferred): 7 days; Frozen: 30 days; Ambient: 24 hours.
Reject Due To: Gross hemolysis, gross icterus. Gross lipemia is acceptable.

- Receiving Instructions
Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature before centrifugation. Serum gel tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection; red-top tubes should be centrifuged and aliquoted within 2 hours of collection. Refrigerate serum.
