Preferred: 3 mL blood in RED TOP tube

Also Acceptable: 3 mL blood in GREEN TOP or LAVENDER TOP tube

Not Acceptable: Any Gel Separator tube

Note: If Red top is received, it will need to be forwarded to HMC or UW-MT Laboratory for testing.

Quantity: Requested: HMC, UWMC: 0.5 mL serum/plasma; R2, SLU, HH: entire Lavender top tube
Minimum: HMC, UWMC: 0.3 mL serum/plasma; R2, SLU, HH: 0.5 mL whole blood

Receiving Instructions: UW-MT Instructions: Deliver serum/plasma to Hand Test bench

HMC Instructions: Deliver serum/plasma to Blood Gas bench

UW-NW Instructions: Deliver serum/plasma to Coag bench for testing.

Roosevelt (R2) South Lake Union (SLU) and Hall Health (HH): Deliver whole blood to the laboratory. Do NOT centrifuge.

Stability: Frozen serum/plasma at -20°C test within 30 days; Refrigerated serum/plasma test within 48 hours; Whole Blood specimen is stable at room temperature or refrigerated for 24 hours.
