Plasmodium 18S Reflexive Sanger Sequencing
General Information
- Lab Name
- Plasmodium 18S Reflexive Sanger Sequencing
- Lab Code
- M18SEQ
- Epic Name
- Plasmodium 18S Reflexive Sanger Sequencing
- Description
Reflex testing only. This test is a reflex test to the Plasmodium 18S rRNA quantitative RT-PCR assay (MAL18S) to identify the Plasmodium species for specimen that were non-Plasmodium falciparum Plasmodium positive. Test will be automatically ordered as indicated by MAL18S test.
This test entry is for information only and cannot be ordered. See, Plasmodium 18S rRNA quantitative RT-PCR assay [MAL18S].
This test was developed, and its performance characteristics were determined, by the University of Washington Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. It is important to note that while this test has been validated for clinical use, it has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), the University of Washington laboratory ensures the test meets high standards for accuracy and reliability in a clinical setting.

Interpretation
- Method
RNA/DNA extraction, Polymerase Chain Reaction, Sanger Sequencing
Reflexive Sanger Sequencing of amplicons produced by the Malaria Molecular Diagnostic Lab’s Plasmodium 18S rRNA/rDNA quantitative real-time reverse-transcriptase Polymerase Chain reaction (test code MAL18S). Samples that were identified as non-P. falciparum Plasmodium positive by the MAL18S test code will be prepared and sent out for CLIA Sanger Sequencing for species identification purposes.
- Reference Range
- See individual components
- Ref. Range Notes
This test can be used for the identification of Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, Plasmodium knowlesi, and Plasmodium vivax.
This test cannot be used to identify more than one species of Plasmodium at a time. Patients who are infected with multiple Plasmodium species will not get a clear read out and may only serve to confirm a general infection by Plasmodium.
