Ordering & Collection

Specimen Type
Stomach antrum tissue biopsy, duodenum tissue biopsy
Collection

Biopsy specimens for culture should be taken before specimens for histological examination to eliminate the risk of transferring small amounts of fixative to the container to be used for culture.

For optimal results, place tissue biopsies into either Copan Universal Transport Medium (UTM-RT) or BD Universal Viral Transport (UVT) medium.

Sterile saline should only be used if the specimen will be immediately transported to the laboratory for processing.

Handling Instructions

H. pylori is a fragile organism. Specimens should be protected from desiccation and exposure to air for any length of time.

  • The use of universal transport media may extend organism viability for 1-2 days. However, prompt transport to the laboratory is ideal for successful isolate recovery.
  • Transport specimens to the laboratory refrigerated.
  • If specimens are submitted in sterile saline, they should be immediately transported and processed (<3 hours).
  • Specimens received in formalin will be rejected.

Processing

Processing

Specimens should be processed immediately upon receipt in the laboratory.
