Description

The absorbance of oxyhemoglobin and bilirubin in CSF are determined using spectrophotometry. A clinical interpretation regarding the likelihood of subarachnoid hemorrage is provided based on the relative absorbance of oxyhemoglobin and bilirubin.

Handling Instructions

After collection, protect the specimen from light by wrapping it in foil, if possible. The laboratory should receive the specimen within 2 hours. If the laboratory will receive the specimen after more than 2 hours, the specimen must be protected from light and refrigerated for up to 72 hours. If the laboratory receives the sample after 72 hours, the sample will be rejected. This panel is best suited for the last tube of CSF collected, e.g. Tube # 4 if 4 tubes of CSF are collected.

Receiving Instructions

Upon receiving the specimen, wrap it in foil immediately if not done by the floor. Send specimen immediately to Stat Toxicology.

Outside laboratories: Protect the specimen from light by wrapping it in foil. Deliver to the lab within 2 hours of collection. If not, keep the sample wrapped and refrigerated and transport it to the laboratory within 72 hours of collection. Do not Freeze.
