Cryoglobulins
Description

Use this mnemonic when only Cryoglobulin requested.

This assay detects the presence of a cryoglobulin, and if present, provides a semi quantitative estimate of the amount. Cryoglobulins are associated with a variety of clinical conditions including: myeloma, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, mixed essential cryoglobulinemia, systemic lupus erythematosus, infectious mononucleosis, cytomegalovirus infections, acute viral hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, post streptococcal glomerulonephritis, infective endocarditis, leprosy, kalaazar, and tropical splenomegaly syndrome.

Collection

15 mL blood in RED TOP tubes. Specimen must be maintained at 37°C after collection.

Handling Instructions

Keep samples warm and transport to lab IMMEDIATELY. Suggest transporting specimens maintained at 37°C, possibly under your arm with specimen tube securely enclosed in a specimen transport bag. Specimen will be rejected if clotted. Not to be drawn on blood draw rounds.

Quantity
Requested: 5 mL serum
Minimum: 3 mL serum

Processing

Receiving Instructions

UW-MT Instructions

Specimen MUST be kept at 37°C until received by COAG Lab. COAG: Put "unclotted" specimen in 37°C waterbath to clot for 1-2 hours to prevent CRYOGLOBULINS from being trapped in clot. After clotting is complete, spin & aliquot serum while serum is still warm. Return sample to the refrigerator in SPS. Do Not Freeze.

HMC Instructions

Specimen MUST be kept at 37°C until received by SPS. SPS will put "unclotted" specimen in 37°C waterbath to clot for 1-2 hours to prevent CRYOGLOBULINS from being trapped in clot. After clotting is complete, spin & aliquot serum while serum is still warm. Refrigerate serum. Do not freeze.

Outside Lab Instructions

Specimen MUST be kept at 37°C until received in the lab. The lab will put "unclotted" specimen in 37°C waterbath to clot for 1-2 hours to prevent CRYOGLOBULINS from being trapped in clot. If a waterbath is not available, a 37°C heat block is acceptable. After clotting is complete, spin & aliquot serum while serum is still warm. Refrigerate serum. Do not freeze.
