Ordering & Collection

Collection
SPINAL FLUID:  Add Spinal Fluid collected from a shunt to a 3 mL LAVENDER HEMOGARD tube.   All other specimens should be collected in tubes provided in the LP kit.
Handling Instructions
Cell count must be done within 1 hour of collection. Transport to the Microbiology Lab immediately (UW-MT: NW173;  HMC: GWH47).

Requested: 1 mL CSF
Minimum: 0.5 mL CSF, 1 mL CSF if collected from a shunt

Receiving Instructions
UW-MT Instructions:  ALWAYS STAT!  
Send CSF to Micro lab - Immediately.  Micro will login & send sample to Hematology for testing.

HMC Instructions: ALWAYS STAT!
SPS staff will login requests from 11:30 pm-07:00 am. Refer to SPS processing instructions on WIKI for more details. Page Chemistry float tech to notify. Micro will log ALL other times and send sample to Hematology for testing.
