Preferred: 3 mL blood in CITRATED Blue Top. RED Top or SST Tube are also acceptable.

Processing

Receiving Instructions

UW-MT and HMC instructions:

If Blue Top Tube AND Lupus Anticoagulant (or other coags) ordered as well: Take Blue top tube to Coag Lab for processing within 4 hours of collection. Coag tech will aliquot and refrigerate plasma sample (minimum 0.8 mL) for Immunology Lab.

If Blue Top Tube for APLSP only: Centrifuge and separate plasma within 4 hours of collection. Refrigerate plasma (only one aliquot needed).

If Red Top or SST Tube: Centrifuge and separate serum within 2 hours of collection. Refrigerate serum (only one aliquot needed).

Outside Laboratory:

Blue Top Tube: Centrifuge Blue top for 10 minutes, remove plasma and re-spin plasma for another 10 minutes. Decant and Freeze plasma (minimum 0.8 mL) at -20°C to -80°C. Send Frozen on dry ice.

Red Top or SST Tube: Centrifuge and separate serum within 2 hours of collection. Refrigerate serum (minimum 0.8 mL).

Stability: Refrigerate up to 14 days, freeze for longer storage. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
