Interpretation

Method

Serum/Plasma: Initial presumptive testing by immunoassay at a testing threshold of 0.5 ng/mL; presumptive positives confirmed to limit of quantitation by definitive gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Urine: Liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS)

Either sample type may be submitted. Serum/plasma is preferred over urine.

Serum/Plasma: 20 mL blood in RED or GREEN TOP (Heparin) tubes. Wrap specimens in foil to protect from light.

  • Gel-barrier tubes are not recommended.

Urine: Collect random urine in a screw-cap urine collection container. Wrap in foil to protect from light.

Handling Instructions

Outside Laboratories: Submit one or both of the following and indicate the sample type on the DLMP requisition.

  • Blood: Centrifuge sample and transfer serum or plasma to a separate amber light-protected vial (samples wrapped in foil are acceptable). Freeze at -20°C.
  • Urine: Transfer 10-20 mL random urine to a screw-cap vial and protect from light by wrapping in foil. Refrigerate urine. Freeze at -20°C.

Processing
  • Blood: Centrifuge sample and transfer serum or plasma to a separate amber light-protected vial, leaving room for expansion. Freeze at -20°C.
  • Urine: Transfer 10-20 mL random urine to a screw-cap vial, leaving room for expansion, and protect from light by wrapping in foil. Freeze at -20°C.
  • If multiple specimen types are submitted, log a separate order for each.

Stability: Frozen: Preferred; Refrigerated: 3 days; Ambient: Unacceptable.

Reject Due To: Samples not light-protected, received refrigerated >3 days after collection.
