Timed Urine:
- Collect urine for 24 hours in a preservative-free amber polyethylene 24-hr urine collection container.
- Refrigerate urine during the collection.
- Record the start/stop date and time.
Random Urine: Collect urine in a screw-cap urine container.
Unacceptable Conditions: Specimens collected with acid. Specimens with pH 7.0 or less.

Outside Laboratories:
Timed Specimen:
- Measure and record total volume.
- Mix well and aliquot 4 mL urine into a separate, screw-cap vial.
- Measure the pH and adjust as needed to achieve a urine pH greater than 7.0.
- Refrigerate urine aliquot while awaiting shipment. Transport with a cold pack.
- Document the total volume and collection interval on the requisition.
Random Specimen:
- Aliquot urine into a separate, screw-cap vial.
- Measure the pH and adjust as needed to achieve a urine pH greater than 7.0.
- Refrigerate urine aliquot while awaiting shipment. Transport with a cold pack.
- Indicate "random" collection on the requisition.
Stability: Refrigerated (Preferred): 10 days; Frozen: 3 weeks; Ambient: 2 days.
