Lab will order appropriate test based on specimen description. Specify source of spinal fluid, preferably using pre-defined specimen descriptors in CPOE. Indicate in special requests if need for anaerobic cultures differs from below.
CSF Culture with Gram Stain [CSFC]: Lumbar puncture, aerobic workup only.
CSF Bacterial Culture and Sensitivity (Special Anaerobic) with Gram Stain [CSFANC]: Aerobic and anaerobic workup. Includes ventricular, subdural, subgaleal, subarachnoid and shunt fluids.

Submit spinal fluid in sterile tube(s) or syringe. Replace needle with Luer tip cap
Transport to laboratory within 1 hour of collection at room temperature. Do not refrigerate CSF because Neisseria meningitidis is susceptible to cold. If specimen is received >12 hours after collection, viability of organisms may be significantly reduced. Specimens received >24 hours after collection, or collected with expired swabs/transport media will be rejected.
