Description

Useful For: Measuring chloride levels in CSF. CSF chloride levels are expected to increase and/or decrease with conditions which increase and/or decrease serum chloride levels. CSF chloride is not recommended for the routine evaluation of suspected tuberculous meningitis.¹

Ordering Note: If provider requests electrolytes on CSF, order this test along with Sodium, CSF and Potassium, CSF.

Handling Instructions

Outside Laboratories: Centrifuge to remove cellular material. Transfer 1 mL supernatant to a separate aliquot. Refrigerate sample while awaiting shipment; transport with a cold pack.

Stability: Refrigerated (preferred): 2 weeks; Frozen: 6 months; Ambient: 2 weeks.

Unacceptable Conditions: Specimen types other than those listed. Specimens too viscous to be aspirated by instrument. Specimens containing sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate as anticoagulants.
