This culture is intended to isolate and identify yeast from urine, upper respiratory (mouth, nose, and throat), and vaginal sources. We are able to identify all yeast including Candida auris.
This culture is NOT intended to rule out filamentous fungi. For extended incubation to include filamentous fungi and sources not listed here, please see fungal cultures specific to specimen type. Urine: Collect midstream or catheterized urine in sterile cup. Immediately transfer urine to a gray top boric acid transport tube. Tubes have a 4 mL draw volume. A minimum fill line of 3 mL is indicated on the label. If specimen volume is <3mL, do not trnasfer urine to sample to a gray top tube.
Acceptable: Urine in sterile cup.
Swab: Preferred transport media is Eswab.
Acceptable: Amies gel swab.
Unacceptable: Universal Transport Medium (UTM), specimens received >2 days after collection, specimens received in expired swabs/transport media, specimens not received in transport media (dry), frozen specimens.
Swabs: Ambient: 2 days, Refrigerated: 2 days, Frozen: Unacceptable
Gray top boric acid transport tube: Room Temperature: 48 h, Refrigerated: 48 h, Frozen: Unacceptable
