Drug Testing for Chronic Prescription of Controlled Substances

Ordering & Collection

Specimen Type: Urine
Collection: 5mL Random Urine. Fresh sample.
Handling Instructions: Send to lab immediately.

Outside Laboratories: Freeze urine at -20°C and send to UW frozen.
Quantity: requested: 5mL urine
minimum: 1mL urine

Processing

HMC SPS

Place specimens retrieved from line SPS outlet rack to UBNZC refrigerated SPS rack #40

Make two aliquots:

HAUTO: Sterile BD vacutainer tube to HMC Automation Line for UPDRS (Pain Drug Screen, URN) and UCETOH

HCSPEC: 3mL in a 12x75 (5mL) polypropylene aliquot tube to HMC (rack #40 in SPS refrigerator) for UETG and UOPIAC.

Note: For samples less than 1mL, do not aliquot. Deliver entire sample along with all labels and pink shared specimen form to HCSPEC rack 40.

Specimens that arrive at SPS frozen:

UUW-MT Instructions: If sample is frozen, thaw and aliquot according to instructions above.

HMC Instructions: If sample is frozen, thaw and aliquot according to instructions above and deliver appropriate sample to HAUTO.

Short specimens: Do not aliquot. Provide labels and specimen to chemistry lead to determine priority.
