Description

Useful for:

  • Follow-up or surveillance of patients with known or treated carcinoid tumors
  • An adjunct in the diagnosis of carcinoid tumors
  • An adjunct in the diagnosis of other neuroendocrine tumors, including pheochromocytomas, medullary thyroid carcinomas, functioning and nonfunctioning islet cell and gastrointestinal amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation tumors, and pituitary adenomas
  • A possible adjunct in outcome prediction and follow-up in advanced prostate cancer

Patient Preparation: Proton pump inhibitor drugs should be discontinued for at least 2 weeks before collection.

Interferences and Limitations

Outside Laboratories: Centrifuge sample and transfer serum to a separate plastic vial. Freeze serum at -20°C.

  • Note: Do not submit serum in original collection tube.

Stability: Frozen (preferred): 90 days; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Ambient: 48 hours.

Reject Due To: Gross hemolysis. Gross lipemia and gross icterus are acceptable.

Centrifuge sample and transfer serum to a separate plastic vial, leaving room at the top for expansion. Freeze serum at -20°C.
