Laboratory will perform PTT-based Factor VIII activity (F8) and reflexively add Chromogenic (2-stage) Factor 8 Inhibitor Assay (F8INH) if F8 activity is below reference range.

Ordering & Collection

Specimen Type: Citrated Whole Blood
Collection: 3 or 5 mL BLUE TOP (Citrate) tube
Forms & Requisitions: Outside clients should fill and submit Coagulation Patient Clinical History Form: Coagulation Patient Clinical History Form
Handling Instructions: Specimen must be processed by Lab within 4 hours of collection.
Quantity: Requested: Entire Sample
Minimum: 1.5 ml plasma

Processing

Receiving Instructions: UW-MT Instructions: Take specimen to UW-MT Coag lab for processing. Coag Tech will freeze plasma sample for transport to HMC Coag.

HMC Instructions: Take Specimen to HMC Cocag Lab for processing.

Outside Laboratory: Centrifuge sample for 10 minutes, remove plasma and re-spin plasma for another 10 minutes. Decant and freeze plasma (minimum 1.5 mL) at -20° C to -80°C. Send frozen on dry ice.

Yes, Monday-Friday 8am-3pm. For other times, contact Lab Medicine resident for approval. Please notify Special Coag Lab on Friday (HMC 206-744-2621, UWMC 206-598-6242) if sending a stat Factor VIII on the weekend.
