Outside locations and clinics: Call UW-MT Microbiology Lab (206-598-6147) in advance of sending specimens. Specimens must be received before 10:30 p.m. for same day processing.

Collect bone marrow in SPS tube.

Disinfect draw site. Disinfect TUBE TOP with iodine. Do NOT allow the iodine to pool in the stopper. Allow to dry. Do NOT overfill or underfill. Inoculate the maximum volume for optimal sensitivity of culture. Underfilled tubes (<0.75 mL) will be rejected

Handling Instructions

Transport at room temperature to the Microbiology laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.

Requested: UWMC: 1.5 mL bone marrow. HMC: 2 mL bone marrow plus 2 smears.
Minimum: UWMC: 0.75 mL bone marrow. HMC: 0.75 mL bone marrow plus 2 smears.
