The detection and quantification of Adenoviruses by real-time PCR amplification. The assay is a multiplex assay divided into 2 reactions. PCR reaction “1” detects amplicons of the hexon region for subgroups A & F. PCR reaction “2” detects amplicons of the hexon region of subgroups B,D,&E and the penton region for subgroup C.

This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by the University of Washington Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Ordering & Collection

Specimen Type
Tissue Biopsy, Bone Marrow, Swab

Bone Marrow: 5 mL blood in EDTA (LAVENDER TOP) tube, No Heparin aspirate in syringe.

Biopsy: Pea Size in sterile tube/universal transport media.

Paraffin tissue: DO NOT SEND ENTIRE BLOCK. Slice 3-4 slices that are 5-50 micron thick in sterile tube.

Swab: In sterile tube/universal transport media (UTM).

Handling Instructions

Bone Marrow: Send LAVENDER TOP to Laboratory at room temperature within 24 hour of collection.

Note: Separate specimens MUST be submitted when both Viral Culture and PCR testing are ordered.

requested: 1 mL
minimum: 0.5 mL

Bone Marrow: Ship at room temperature within 24 hours of collection.

Biopsy: Sample may be stored at 2-8°C (wet ice) within 48 hours of collection. Freeze at -10°C or colder. Do not freeze/thaw.

Paraffin tissue: Ship at room temperature.

Swabs: Sample may be stored at 2-8°C (wet ice) for up to 48 hours of collection. Freeze at -10°C or colder. Do not freeze/thaw.

Outside Laboratories:

Harvest buffy coat from Bone Marrow within 24 hours of collection, Freeze at -10°C or colder.

Swabs freeze at -10°C or colder. Ship on dry ice. Do not freeze/thaw. If freezer and/or dry ice is not available, ship immediately at 2-8°C (wet ice), shipment time must not to exceed 48 hours from collection. Samples stored at 2-8°C greater than 48 hours old may be rejected.
