Description

Thyroglobulin antibody and recovery testing is not performed on fluid samples

A thyroglobulin level in a fine needle aspirate (FNA) wash is used in addition to cytological review of the biopsy sample to find evidence of metastatic thyroid cancer.

Interferences and Limitations

Proper collection of the FNA wash is required. After collection and expulsion of cytology samples, the fine needle aspirate needles are rinsed in a total volume of 0.5-1.0 mL normal saline.

After collection and expulsion of cytology samples, the fine needle aspirate biopsy needle are rinsed in total volume of 0.5 - 1 mL of normal saline and sent to the laboratory directly.

Handling Instructions

Most often 2 samples are received per patient. One is a fine needle aspirate (FNA) and the other is a Wash. EACH SAMPLE MUST BE ORDERED SEPARATELY WITH A DIFFERENT ACC#. Please do not combine the samples.

If only the FNA sample is received, the test will still be run.

Receiving Instructions

Freeze fluid at -20°C

Outside Laboratories: Collect sample as noted above. Refrigerate or Freeze sample for transport to UW-MT

Stability: up to 8 hours at Room Temperature; up to 14 days at 2-8°C; stable long term at -20°C. Avoid repeated freeze thaw cycles.
