HSV Acyclovir Drug Resistance by Sanger Sequencing
General Information
- Lab Name
- HSV Acyclovir Drug Resistance
- Lab Code
- HSVDR
- Epic Ordering
- HSV Acyclovir Drug Resistance
- Description
The test is designed to detect and characterize Acyclovir drug resistance associated with specific mutations found in the Thymidine Kinase (UL23) gene of both HSV Type 1 and HSV Type 2. These mutations can lead to a reduced or absent response to Acyclovir, a commonly used antiviral treatment.
This test was developed, and its performance characteristics were determined, by the University of Washington Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. It is important to note that while this test has been validated for clinical use, it has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), the University of Washington laboratory ensures the test meets high standards for accuracy and reliability in a clinical setting.

Blood: Separate plasma/serum from whole blood within 24 hours of collection. Freeze at -10°C or colder and ship on dry ice. If freezer and/or dry ice is not available, ship immediately at 2-8°C (ice pack). Sample may be stored at 2-8°C (ice pack) for up to 48 hours of collection. Samples stored at 2-8°C greater than 48 hours old may be rejected. Do not freeze/thaw.
CSF or Clear non-cellular fluid: If CSF has cellular material, centrifuge & aliquot clear CSF.
Outside Laboratory: Freeze at -10°C or colder and ship on dry ice. If freezer and/or dry ice is not available, ship immediately at 2-8°C (ice pack). Sample may be stored at 2-8°C (ice pack) for up to 48 hours of collection. Shipment time must not exceed 48 hours from collection if stored at 2-8°C.
